Now hold on a minute Woodrow! I will give it to you that the Northeast cell is the "original" Friends of the Pleistocene, but the fact that other cells exist and remain active makes us all "true" Friends of the Pleistocene. I somewhat regularly attend trips in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific cells, and as Marith states in her interview, they have been held almost every year since their inception. In fact, the Pacific cell has actually run two trips in a single year several times. The informality of the organization that is implied is more about the idea that there are no elected officers or an organizational committee, at least for those cells in the western U.S. It is a glowing example of a grassroots organization that continues to function based on a mutual interest in things that are Pleistocene.

Hello all,

This is Woodrow Thompson. I am a Quaternary geologist with the Maine Geological Survey and the current Secretary of the Northeastern Friends of the Pleistocene. Some postings on this site imply that we are so informal that we scarcely exist. Not true. We have been holding well attended annual field conferences since our inception in 1934. These trips range all over the Northeast and eastern Canada. We have a website hosted by the University of Maine (URL given above), on which many of our past guidebooks are posted (more to come as time permits). We do not charge dues or issue membership cards, but along with the other FOP branches around the country (some more active than others), we ARE the true Friends of the Pleistocene.

That's a fair question, but there's no easy answer. The hallmark of the FOP is "informal". There is no existing organization that runs it. Only recently have websites been assembled for trips and these are basically one-offs that exist only to put the trip together and announce the information. Your best bet is to subscribe to the Quaternary and or Geomorph listserves, as the Pacific Cell (at least) always announces its trips using these. They are: QUATERNARY@CLIFFY.UCS.MUN.CA, GEOMORPH-L@LISTSERV.BOISESTATE.EDU

Unfortunately the geologists administering the various FOP cells don't update their websites. For instance, Dr. Reheis says the Pacific Cell is going to Walker Lake this year, but the latest information on this site is from 2007 and AMQUA's Pacific Cell page is nine years old. There's a Yahoo group that stopped in 2008. How can we keep up?
