I have been thinking like this for 35 years, and producing the visual work to go along with it. A perusal of my web site might be a good idea. In addition to the visuals, there is some interesting reading material. www.stevensiegel.net

Here is a review of my current exhibition at Marlborough Chelsea in NY: http://www.artsjournal.com/artopia/2011/02/steven_siegel_the_sculptor_fro.html

A formal paper would not be in order, but if you are interested in doing some kind of visual essay please let me know.

Piquing interest.

I don't think we're "growing" abilities to sense deep time. Understanding it is very different than having a visceral sense for it. Deep time is no more comprehensible to human scale and experience than are invisible dimensions, atomic scale, or the size of the expanding universe. For me at least, all of the above give me butterflies in my stomach akin to standing at the edge of a cliff. I think the best our species can manage is to shudder at the vastness of what we can't fully comprehend.
