Join us at OBSERVATORY, smudge studio’s geo | cosmo field station, workshop + tea hut, located at 158 High Street in Belfast, Maine.

We will host a soft opening for the space and our first project, Starting with the Tilt of the Earth, May 27-28th, 002022, from 1-4pm. We look forward to building out the space and its projects throughout the summer.
OBSERVATORY rides upon Belfast’s bedrock within the thin crust of planet Earth. Here, we will experiment with aesthetic experience as a means for expanding human senses of place and time to include the vast and generative powers of the cosmos and our planet. We look forward to staging exhibitions and events that offer experiences of belonging, even within times of environmental + cultural change.

Also opening in May are Lisa Hirmer’s long-term, outdoor installation, grass drifts for planet watchers and Oliver Kellhammer’s Plastivore in the ERRATIC OBSERVATIONS exhibition space inside OBSERVATORY. We invite submissions on an ongoing basis for ERRATIC OBSERVATIONS from guest artists, scientists, teachers, designers, and citizen observers of the cosmos. See our open call for information on how to submit work and ideas.

Over the coming months, public events at OBSERVATORY will include:

– Observation-based micro-productions and workshops for creating and reflecting on embodied experiences of geo | cosmo transformation.

– Public reading and library space including resources dedicated to ancient and contemporary observational practices: geology, ecology, art, land-use interpretation, Daoism, weather/cloud spotting, tea brewing and drinking, long life design.

COSMOS DAILY window installations, free and open to the public, viewable 24/7 (also posted online @observatorybelfast)

– Collaborative observational and field note projects and events staged in conjunction with local Belfast and Maine organizations, individuals and businesses.

– Exhibitions of work by guest artists, educators, and practitioners curated through the lens of observations of geo/cosmo/planetary change.

-“Slow tea with the planet”: an evolving series of 30-60 minute long micro-productions and tea events that reframe the brewing and drinking of tea as a geo/cosmo event.

– Local landscape inspired, gluten free, vegan, chocolate “ledge cookies” that provide a material tale of the Maine bedrock upon which OBSERVATORY stands.

We welcome you to visit us in-person, stop by for tea and follow our window installations on instagram
